Everyone talks about “differentiating yourself”, “creating a competitive advantage,” or your “unique value proposition,” but I found that Smith was deft at calling companies out on generalities and getting them to the specifics on what makes their product or service truly worth buying. What I REALLY valued in this book was the thought process on how to get your team to move from abstract ideas to tangible selling points (your competitive advantage) that will make your customers want to buy from your company.

Jaynie Smith’s Creating Competitive Advantage is essential reading for any business leader pursuing sustainable growth. Smith astutely highlights overlooked practical solutions that leaders often complicate when seeking growth. This book provides a clear, actionable framework for identifying and communicating a firm’s unique advantages to all stakeholders. The principles of Creating Competitive Advantage will truly distinguish a company in today’s competitive landscape.

Her particular approach to ‘creating competitive advantage’ has helped thousands of firms to recognize deficiencies, seize opportunities, and go on to establish their respective, unique advantages over competitors. While there can be external and internal ‘differentiation advantages,’ they must all meet tough criteria. They must be objective, not subjective — you cannot just claim advantages; since you must prove them, they must be quantifiable and unique to your firm. Finally, they must surmount the ridicule that accompanies claims based on cliches. Unsubstantiated assertions are less than useless in business (and elsewhere), so Ms. Smith takes the reader through case studies exhibiting success in wildly different fields and scales of enterprise. The reader sees — again and again — exactly how to sift through false starts and
inaccurate diagnoses to reach maximum possible success. By the end, the aspiring entrepreneur as well as the struggling firm has been presented with a ‘how-to’ guide of the utmost value. Clearly written, with a light touch and case studies that reflect the most differentiated set of circumstances and challenges, this is an indispensable book for anyone wishing to realize ’The American Dream.’

As senior leader, I’m always seeking practical, results-driven strategies to elevate our business. Jaynie L. Smith’s book, Creating Competitive Advantage, is an unbelievably impactful philosophy and one of the most impactful books I have read. Her clear, no-nonsense approach to identifying and articulating what truly sets a company apart has helped sharpen the value proposition and align sales messaging across teams I have led. I was so impressed with her insights that we brought Jaynie in as the keynote speaker for a national sales leadership meeting. Her message resonated deeply with our team! I have since incorporated her book into our ongoing sales training programs. It’s a must-read for any business leader serious about growth.
